About the Film: Not a film for celebrating the Christmas holidays, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence takes place during World War II in a Japanese prison camp for allied soldiers. It centers on the obsessive hatred/friendship/attraction between the Japanese commander (Ryuichi Sakamoto) and a British officer (David Bowie). It’s a more brutal and disturbing movie than The Bridge on the River Kwai, which seems tame by comparison. (123 minutes)
