Session Descriptions from Redline:

Session 1: May 30, June 6, June 13, and June 20

Led by artists Ashley Frazier and Michael Sperandeo

The first session features community artists Ashley Frazier and Mike Sperandeo with their interactive basketball sculpture. Any person that wants to be involved in the creation of this piece is invited to try and score a basket with a balloon filled with non-toxic, washable paint. Not only is throwing paint at things as fun as it seems, but the colorful surface of the sculpture that results from repeated attempts shows that every time you try, it has an impact. Even if you don’t always reach your intended goal, the result can still be worthwhile!

Session 2: June 27, July 4, July 11, July 18

Led by artist Christine Dart

Dance instructor Christine Dart will help participants to tell stories about their neighborhood with dance, theatre and play. Over the four weeks, children and their families will be able to create a story-telling dance piece that they can perform together. Don’t worry if you aren’t a great dancer – this project is more about having fun while expressing yourself and learning others’ stories than it is about getting the steps perfect.  Participants are encouraged to attend as many dates as possible, as each one is different and offers the chance to practice and build on what was done the previous week.

Session 3: July 25, August 1, August 8, August 15

Led by artist Tracy Tomko

Community artist Tracy Tomko presents her project, “Prototypes to Increase Exuberance” features objects modified in ridiculous ways to be swung, twirled and bounced. The silly, awkward way in which they are used serves as a method to deal with uncomfortable emotions. As a part of this interactive performance, participants are encouraged to work with the artist to create their own unusual objects to use, with their own symbolism and solutions to their own adversities.

Session 4: August 15, August 22, August 29, September 5

Led by arist Risa Murray

Community artist Risa Murray will help the neighborhood to put on a puppet show. From deciding on a story from the Five Points/Whittier/Curtis Park area’s rich and diverse cultural past to making the puppets and sets and finally performing and watching the show as a community, this fun experience will have children and families working and learning together.
