Painting v. Photography: An Analysis of Clyfford Still’s Aesthetic and Approach Across Media

April 25, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Painting almost exclusively exists in the realm of art while photography is situated on a spectrum between document and art. While Clyfford Still worked predominantly as a painter, he also experimented with other visual media throughout his career, including photography.  The Clyfford Still Museum Archives (CSMA) contains thousands of photographs—a fraction of which were taken by Still himself.

Join Kim Roberts, junior fellow of the Clyfford Still Museum Research Center, to talk about her recent research on the CSMA photography collection and her analysis of the relationship between Still’s photographs, paintings, and artworks in other media.  Roberts will share her analysis of the photographs that appear to be beyond pure document; explore the ways Still’s aesthetic, subjects, and approach translate across media; and consider how the photographs relate to both Still’s regionalist painting of the 1930s and his later abstractions.
