Lecture: Action Abstraction: the Critics, the Artists, and the New York School

July 13, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Norman Kleeblatt, Susan and Elihu Rose Chief Curator, the Jewish Museum, New York

Join Clyfford Still Museum and Denver Art Museum for the second lecture in the series Women of Abstract Expressionism in Context.  Celebrate the women who helped forge Abstract Expressionism, the first fully American modern art movement. Speakers will reassess the role of women painters within this movement that has been customarily defined by heroic male painters.

Norman L. Kleeblatt, the Susan and Elihu Rose Chief Curator of the Jewish Museum in New York, is renowned for his well-crafted and broad ranging exhibitions. His 2008 award-winning show for the Jewish Museum, Action/Abstraction: Pollock, De Kooning, and American Art, 1940-1976, is an example of his rethinking of art and cultural history as well as exhibition models. In 2014 he organized Mel Bochner: Strong Language and co-curated From the Margins: Lee Krasner | Norman Lewis, 1945-1952. Kleeblatt’s articles have appeared in ArtforumArt in America, the Art Journal, and ARTnews. He has received grants from the Getty Research Institute, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
