Denver Rocks! Let's do cool things!
For the 73rd consecutive year, the National Western Stock Show’s Champion Steer will stroll into Denver’s most elegant and iconic room – the nine-story atrium lobby of The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa – to be adorned with roses and preside over Afternoon Tea.
This uniquely Denver tradition is a celebration of the Mile High City’s western heritage and an opportunity to support There With Care, a non-profit that supports Colorado families and children facing a medical crisis.
The 2018 Grand Champion Steer will make his regal entrance by 11 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018. The public is invited to observe this beloved tradition and can pose for a souvenir photo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Photos are a suggested $10 donation to There With Care, and anyone who purchases a photo will be entered into a raffle to win prizes from The Brown Palace, including an overnight stay in The Brown’s newly renovated guest rooms, a sumptuous brunch at Ellyngton’s, Afternoon Tea and more.
There With Care will be on-site and accepting gift cards and on-site donations of any amount. Each week, There With Care provides fundamental support services to approximately 125 – 130 Denver area families whose child is facing a critical illness and all funds will help them to meet the growing demand.
Rodeo royalty will also be on hand for photos and autographs. Following the photo session, the champion steer will head to the Auction of Junior Champions to be sold that evening. Past champions have sold for more than $100,000.
This will be the 73rd year for the showing of the grand champion in The Brown Palace lobby. However, it’s not the first time stock animals have been in the lobby. In 1945, future Colorado Governor Dan Thornton arranged to have two Hereford bulls shown in the lobby, and then sold for the unheard of $50,000.
